Giving Back on A Budget

If you are in college or are a recent graduate, you are probably asking how can I give back to my community while I am trying to get out of debt?  Well you came to the right place!

Giving back to the college that you go to or community that you are living in can be a very satisfying activity. It makes a lot of people feel really good about what they are doing. When you are trying to get out of debt, there is not always room in your budget to donate to local nonprofits and charities.

I created a guide to giving back while you are trying to get out of debt! You can give your time, rewards, round ups, treasures, blood, or your hair to help the community! Check out my description of each option today!

Give Your Time

To give back to your community, you can volunteer your time wherever you are. If you are passionate about your school, contact the office to see if they are looking for any volunteers.

If you are more passionate about the community, reach out to local nonprofit organizations who are looking for volunteers.

Giving back to your school is a great way to look really good in front of your professors and school in general. If you are able to find a volunteering opportunity that also gets you professional experience that is even better!

If you are a marketing major, look at the marketing department at your school! I’m sure that they would be happy to work with you.

There are many opportunities to work for nonprofits as well. The community that I went to college in had a small business association that I volunteered with. They had monthly meetings that I attended and brought some ideas.

I also was able to help out in the community while getting marketing experience.

International Volunteering Opportunities

How cool would it be if you were able to go abroad to volunteer your time building houses, farming, working in a low income area or working on other jobs. There are websites such as THIS ONE that give you many different options of programs. While these are not free, you will be able to give back to the world while seeing new things.

Donate Your Rewards

Many debit cards give rewards points when you spend so much money. They are similar to the credit cards that give rewards points only a debit card is 10x better than a credit card. You can donate the rewards that you receive from your bank or credit union to a local nonprofit organization. Even though this amount may be small, it will add up in the long run if you continue to donate your rewards.

Round Up Your Purchases

Similar to my suggestion of donating your rewards, you can round up your purchases. This is a great way of donating without really even noticing it in your budget. The amounts will be small, but if you buy as much as I do, you will end up donating a substantial amount in the long run.

One Man’s Trash Is Another Man’s Treasure

“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” is a very popular saying that is very true when you are living on a budget. Although many times when you are getting out of debt, you may be using used things, you can always donate your own use things as well.

There are many companies that take your used clothes and donate them to the less fortunate.

You could donate your old clothes, old office supplies, your old decorations, or even your old car to all different companies throughout the country. They are happy to take any donations that you may have.

I do highly suggest researching the company that you are going to donate to before you do it though.

Some companies such as GoodWill make a profit off of the donations that you make, while more local non-profits will use your donations for the better good of the community.

When you are on a college campus, many college students have very little money. They would be very appreciative of some of the things that you have.

My campus had a food bank for the college students who were looking for food. Instead of donating your old clothes, school supplies, or decorations, you could donate canned goods.

Medical Donations

Instead of donating your time or your old things, you could donate to the American RedCross.  There are thousands of people who are looking for blood donations, but can’t get them because Red Cross and other companies don’t have any. Donate your blood and other things if you want to give back on a budget.

Many times these companies will come to your college campus to take blood donations.

You can usually easily sign up for them through the school or through the company. Always read the rules to make sure that you are eligible.

If you are not so fond of needles like me, you can donate other things as well. The National Milk Bank is always looking for breast milk from women.

You could also donate to companies like Locks of Love who make wigs out of hair. Both of these things can cost people a lot of money if they are not donated. Check out the different companies that you may be able to donate to today!

To Sum It Up…

There are many ways to give back to your community while you are on a budget or trying to get out of debt. You could donate your time, money, or blood to help the less fortunate people in your community or country.
